The Armstrong Air & Space Museum

On July 20, 1969, the world paused for a brief, shining moment. “That’s one small step for man…one giant leap for mankind,” Neil Armstrong said, his words heard by a billion people throughout the world who were glued to their television sets, as he cautiously backed out of the spacecraft’s hatch and set foot on the soft dust of the lunar surface.   Apollo 11 had landed on the moon.

In Wapakoneta, the hometown of the first person to walk on the moon, The Armstrong Air & Space Museum, strikingly modern exhibits chronicle Ohio’s contributions to the history of space flight. Among the items on display are a F5D Sky Lancer, the Gemini VIII spacecraft, space suits, Apollo 11 artifacts and a moon rock. In the museum’s Astro-theater, multimedia presentations of the sights and sounds of space unfold against a starry background, giving visitors a sense of the vastness of space. Visitors journey through aviation and aerospace history, where it all began 70 years earlier in the Dayton, Ohio workshop of aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Did you know that by 1999, state of Ohio had produced 23 astronauts? Ohio has become known as the Birthplace of Aviation, and The Armstrong Air & Space Museum is dedicated to all Ohioans who have attempted to defy gravity.
